THEY'VE already wowed the public nationwide but now a Dunfermline gymnastics team have the support of one of Hollywood's biggest film stars.

The Spartans Gymnastic Display Team, who famously reached the semi-finals of the hit ITV show 'Britain's Got Talent' in 2016, have been hailed by actor Gerard Butler, who has starred in films such as 300, The Bounty Hunter and London Has Fallen.

Last month we reported that, before the New Year, 19 members and coaches with the team travelled to Gran Canaria to take part in a gymnastic festival.

The week-long tour saw the talented squad travel across the island to perform in a number of towns and villages and won plenty of friends and admirers along the way as they entertained locals in their own dramatic style.

Trampettes, crash mats, their one-of-a-kind vaulting table and the centrepiece of their display - measuring more than six-feet tall - all went with them as they performed five displays at a variety of locations.

Their signature display, which can be viewed on Youtube, is inspired by Butler's 300 film, in which he stars as Leonidas, King of Sparta.

Having come across our story on the Spartans, who train in Bruce Street, Butler took to both Facebook and Twitter to write: "Just read about this army of Scottish gymnasts called the Spartans, who invaded Spain for a competition and basically kicked some ass. Where were you guys when we were making 300? We might have won!! Makes me proud to be Scottish. Well done lads. Spartans, prepare for glory!"

Dunfermline Press:

In reply, the Spartans Murdo MacLean said: "(We're) So grateful to Gerard Butler for acknowledging us Spartans Resurrection Display Team. This is huge for us and would love for an opportunity for the team to meet with you, maybe even get you in one of our displays!!"

The team themselves also posted on Facebook: "Thrilled to get acknowledge by global superstar and fellow Scot, Mr Gerard Butler. Thanks so much. What a great start to 2018. We would love to meet you in person and who knows maybe even feature King Leonidas in our "300" inspired display."

The Spartans – under the banner of Spartans Resurrection – received nationwide attention when they took part in hit ITV show Britain’s Got Talent almost two years ago in the hope of performing at the Royal Variety Show.

The team of 18 gymnasts, aged between 13-23, reached the live televised semi-finals after receiving four ‘Yes’ votes from the judges at their audition, but missed out on a place in the final.

You can follow the club, which is based at Dunfermline’s Bruce Street, on Facebook under Spartans Resurrection Team, on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, which hosts some of their exciting displays, including their popular ‘American Horror’-inspired ‘Creepy’ display, their new ‘Doomsday’-inspired display ‘The Cure’ and their signature display inspired by the Gerard Butler film ‘300’.
