Dunfermline Police are warning the public and businesses to stay alert for fake cash.
Fake Ulster Bank £50 notes have been used eight times in Dunfermline and have been exchanged in shops primarily in the Kingsgate Centre and High Street areas.
The counterfeit cash has also been recently used in Dumfries and Galloway, The Borders, Stirling and Tayside.
Suspects have been using an old style £50 note which is green in colour, but shops should only be accepting the newer purple note.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Over the past month officers are aware of eight reported incidents of counterfeit currency being used in the Dunfermline area.
“Fake Ulster Bank £50 notes have been exchanged in shops primarily in the Kingsgate Centre and High Street areas.
“Officers would encourage business premises and retail owners to be vigilant and challenge customers should they have any doubts on the legitimacy of the money being used to pay for goods.
“Premises are asked to retain the currency and report all instances of counterfeit notes to police immediately via 101, or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
