THERE was a special birthday card for one Dunfermline care home resident last week when she celebrated her 100th birthday.

May McWhirr reached the milestone and showed off her card from the Queen at a celebration at Newlands Care Home.

Born in Glasgow a century ago, May met husband Martin when they were both in their teens and married during the war in 1940.

The couple had three children, Maureen, Hilda and Martin and eventually moved to Galashiels.

May moved to Dunfermline just under two years ago to be closer to eldest daughter Maureen.

May has eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren with another one due this week.

As well as a celebration at her care home, she also enjoyed a family party.

Daughter Maureen said her mum had a special secret for her old age.

“She says it is down to the brandy,” she told the Press. “She likes one going to her bed! She was always a very active lady and liked to dance and to do hill-walking.”
