MAKING pizzas at the deli counter led to a sold-out play for one Dunfermline woman.

Since graduating from college in California, Kasia Grycuk has been working at various jobs wondering what she would do as a career.

But after spending time on the pizza counter at Asda St Leonards she was inspired to write a comedy around the staff and customers she meets every day.

'Deli Girls' debuted at the Outwith Festival in Dunfermline to a sold-out audience and now Kasia has high hopes of it touring in other theatres around Scotland.

The 28-year-old said: "I wrote a play when I was 16 for a competition but I never did it again. When working at Asda though, I was taking a young writers' class and it had been on my mind to do something.

"I then met Chris Foote, organiser of the Outwith Festival, at Asda and I told him I'd really like to do something for it.

"He was a great encouragement and put me in touch with a guy called Tom Freeman who supports Dunfermline writers and he ended up directing the play.

"It was a great success, it was fully sold out and I even had to turn some people away. The audience found it very funny which was everything I wanted really.

"The play was inspired by working on the pizza counter so it was great that my colleagues came along to see it too!"

The comedy was based around the concept of technological changes in the supermarket with machines making pizzas, the impact of technology on communities and how it affects relationships between the customers and staff.

The three main characters are played by actors Lynne McCallum, Gowan Calder and Alison McFarlane.

"I've been working on the pizza counter for about a year and a half and the thing about retail is that you meet so many characters," Kasia added.

"A customer will say something, and I think that's really funny!

"You're in the middle of a social scene so there's a lot going on around you.

"It was great that I was able to pilot it in Dunfermline and now I've gone away to make some changes to it I would love to put to put it out to theatres in Scotland. Tom has been great in supporting me in that.

"It was fantastic to see my colleagues in the audience too and it just shows that everyone has a story to share and something interesting to say.

"There were times when I wanted to give up but I think it helped to have a deadline and Tom and Chris were both there to tell me to keep going!

"I was so fortunate to have this opportunity and I also have a great time working at Asda, I've made great friends and it's given me the material I needed for my play!"
