RESIDENTS in Halbeath are angry as recycling bins at Asda overflow with rubbish leaving a "disgraceful mess".

A Press reader who wished to remain anonymous was left stunned as they discovered the state of the recycling point within the grounds of the supermarket car park.

They said: "It's simply a disgraceful mess ... I'm only one of an awful lot of local residents who are unhappy at this."

An Asda spokesperson told the Press that the bins are emptied once a week by Fife Council, and a worker at the store is required to call the local authority should they require an earlier collection.

They added that the supermarket had received no complaints over recycling in the last six months.

A Fife Council spokesperson said the problem was "short-term" and they would be working with Asda to take relevant action to resolve the problem.

The story follows West Fifers being warned last week that their bad bin habits at another supermarket could cause them to lose the recycling point at Tesco Duloch.

The facility has been dogged by problems since last Christmas when mountains of rubbish left the area inaccessible.

Items such as toilets, sofas and general household waste had all been dumped and fed-up council workers have been struggling to clear it.

Councillor Ross Vettraino said the council had been working with Tesco management to stop the abuse of the facility by irresponsible members of the public.

He said: "The vast majority of people use the facility properly but there is a minority, who are no more than environmental vandals and who regularly abuse the facility by contaminating the bins and indiscriminately dumping items that could be taken to the local recycling centre."
