CROSSGATES Primary said farewell to its long-serving depute head this week after three decades.

Wilma Gowans arrived at the school 30 years ago after working for 11 years as a teacher at Burntisland Primary.

Pupils, former students, staff and friends of the school gathered for a special assembly to mark her retirement just before the October holidays.

Colleague Lisa O’Donnell said it had been an emotional occasion.

“The staff did a poem for her and the children did a song for her and there was a tribute on behalf of the staff which was quite emotional,” she said.

“At the end of the day, we had a guard of honour in the playground. All the children and the school community did that and anyone who she had taught was able to be part of the celebration.”

As well as the assembly, children throughout the week had been working on a bucket list for Mrs Gowans and she visited each class who taught her a new dance or a new song.

On Thursday, Mrs Gowans was presented with an array of gifts from staff, pupils and the PTA.

Miss O’Donnell added: “I think she is now planning lots of long lies and dog walks and has also talked about going somewhere to go and watch whales.”
