A COWDENBEATH man who smeared excrement in a police cell said he had "gone off the rails" after taking a substance he had never tried before.

Sean Penman's behaviour was described as "erratic" by police officers.

Penman, 37, of Bridge Street, previously admitted that on July 11 at Arthur Place, Cowdenbeath, he did hinder two police constables then in the execution of their duty and did struggle with them violently.

Also, at Dunfermline Police Station he did without reasonable excuse, wilfully or recklessly destroy or damage the property belonging to another and did smear excrement on the walls and CCTV camera of a cell there.

Depute fiscal, Azrah Yousaf, told Dunfermline Sheriff Court police were called after an incident between the accused and a friend.

Police tried to detain Penman, but he violently struggled.

The excrement that he smeared on a cell cost £76 to clear up.

Defence solicitor, James Moncrieff, said his client had difficulties with substance misuse and had previously been in rehab.

"He took a substance he had not taken before and that caused him to go off the rails," Mr Moncrieff said.

"He thought the police were quite forceful with them, but he accepts that was his fault.

"He is embarrassed."

Sheriff Charles Macnair said: "Police officers are entitled to the protection of the courts when people behave in this matter.

"You have previous convictions which give an indication of your attitude to police officers."

Penman was placed on a restriction of liberty order for 135 days and was ordered to pay £76 in compensation.
