A KIND-HEARTED Dunfermline woman who lost her locks for charity says she's been blown away after raising more than £4,000.

Lorna Ward, 49, braved the shave after organising a fundraising disco at Dunfermline West End Bowling Club to say thank you to CLIC Sargent, the UK's leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families.

She was inspired to help the organisation after her friend, Laura Polson, and her grand-daughter, Bella, were both diagnosed with the disease last November.

In July, we reported that Laura and three of her loved ones were all told they had the illness within weeks of each other, while Laura's sons cycled from John O'Groats to Land's End and raised £2,800 for CLIC Sargent.

The charity provided accommodation and financial grants to help the family cope with many hospital trips over the year and Lorna, who packs the bowling club on the last Saturday of each month by organising cabaret nights, decided to give something back.

With the help of her pals – affectionately known as 'Lorna's Loonies' – they enlisted Yvonne Sutherland, from David Gray Salons on Hospital Hill, to cut her hair, while businesses from around the town and beyond rallied round the cause by offering a variety of prizes for auction.

Those included hospitality for a Pars match at East End, free haircuts from David Gray and a fourball from Canmore Golf Club, with the auction alone raising more than £1,000 for the cause.

Lorna said: "It came about because Laura and her grand-daughter were fighting cancer at the same time, and CLIC Sargent were a great support to them.

"They helped with accommodation near the hospital for Bella's dad, as he wanted to be with her, so we did a wee thank you.

"I organise entertainment nights once a month, so me and my loonies thought we'd do a charity event. I, jokingly, said I'd get my head shaved if I raised a grand, never thinking I'd get it, but the money kept rolling in!

"Businesses gave us some great prizes to auction and we were given some amazing raffle prizes. People are so generous.

"We've raised £4,147.40 and we're not finished yet – people are still saying they'll pop money in, or put it on the (justgiving) page.

"It blew me away. It was a lot of hard work but, even if it helps one wee bairn get a bit of respite, then it's been worth it."

Lorna is still taking donations on her justgiving page, which can be accessed at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/law1ward.
