A DUNFERMLINE charity is "chuffed to bits" after a foodbank donation challenge went viral online.

The challenge has spread across social media all over the world with West Fifers taking part in filling trolleys of food before donating it to foodbank collections in stores.

The #FoodBankNomination trend was started by a new father in England and it's now reached Fife with customers at supermarkets packing trolleys full of goods.

Jonathan Astill, project manager at Dunfermline Foodbank, said: "It's phenomenal.

"We're absolutely delighted to receive these donations and I think it's amazing that this challenge has started.

"Some people have to choose between heating and eating. It's getting colder and colder right now, and that's the choice some people have to make.

"The need increases at this time of year and it's amazing that this nomination challenge is going to help us help so many people.

"It's definitely a boost to us and it shows that there's so many kind people out there.

"I think people can forget that we need to be there for each other. We need to come together, and that's why I think this is just brilliant.

"I'm chuffed to bits."

One West Fifer, who wished to remain anonymous after taking part, told the Press: "It's all for a good cause. The nominations have spread quickly and I wanted to do it straightaway.

"It's about helping others out, as this time of year is tough for a lot of people.

"It's so important to help those who are struggling and living in poverty and that's why I'm pleased to see everyone nominated actually doing the challenge and filling up a trolley of donations.

"I think it's important to spread the word and get people involved."

Watson Harrop, from County Durham, kickstarted the viral hit when he challenged friends to follow his lead.

He made the call to action after becoming a father recently and wanted communities to rally and help those less fortunate.

The 29-year-old's appeal snowballed as videos of donations being made came in from America, Australia and across Europe, with a large amount being donated by travelling communities.
