A WEST FIFE man has hit out at communications giants Virgin Media after a salesmen tried to make his elderly mum open her door at 8pm in the evening.

Jessie McHardy, 81, had a ‘No cold calling’ sign displayed at her Dunfermline home and son David Birrell was furious that she was still targeted.

“They had been walking about the street all day,” he told the Press.

“She is 81 and she is a widow – we lost my dad four months ago. She has a ‘No cold calling’ sign there. I am the man in her life now and I need to take care of her.

“The guy was knocking on doors saying, ‘Can you open your door?’ She came down the stair lift and he kept knocking on the door. He just told her his first name and that he was from Virgin Media.

He said, ‘Just open the door so I can speak to you’. She told him that she didn’t open the door at night and he said, ‘I am not speaking to people through a closed door’. I have tried phoning to complain but you can’t speak to anyone. You can’t get through. It is absolutely ridiculous.”

A Virgin Media Spokesperson they had a policy in place not to knock on doors where ‘No cold calling’ signs are displayed, adding: “We apologise for any distress caused to Mrs McHardy.”
