Wintry weather has triggered the Met Office to upgrade a yellow warning for ice to amber this weekend.

Heavy snow and blizzards are still forecast for West Fife as temperatures plummet.

A yellow weather warning for snow still remains in place between midday on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

The Met Office said: "Heavy freezing rain is expected to develop during Saturday.

"This will result in the rapid formation of widespread ice on roads, pavements, trees and other structures.

"Freezing rain is rare in the United Kingdom but when it does occur the impacts can be very severe."

A low-pressure weather system developing in the Atlantic is set to clash with cold air across the UK, which could see freezing rain turning to snow.

The Met Office said between 10cm and 20cm of snow is predicted across Scotland and northern England.

The bitter weather could bring chaos with warnings for possible travel delays or cancellations, power cuts and fears some rural communities could become cut off.

A forecaster from the Met Office said: “Across central and eastern parts it will be colder than average, looking at highs between four and six degrees by day.

“At night time, we’ll see temperatures hitting freezing tonight and then see temperatures drop below freezing tomorrow.”

High winds are also expected to sweep across the country, reaching between 40mph and 45mph. Forecasters said the winds will ease for a time on Friday but pick up again over the weekend due to the low pressure system.

Looking ahead to the festive period, forecasters said the weather had the potential to be unsettled.
