YOUTHS shouted abuse at 999 workers as they tried to tackle a blaze started by vandals at a West Fife primary school last weekend.

Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses after a bin was set on fire at St Serf's Primary School in High Valleyfield on Saturday evening.

A post on South West Fife Police's Twitter feed branded behaviour from youths while they were dealing with the incident as "not acceptable."

It said youths had shouted abuse at both sets of emergency services and two people had been charged with police assault and breach of the peace.

A spokesperson said the incident happened at around 7.30pm. "Police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended and the blaze was quickly extinguished," added the spokesperson. "Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Dunfermline Police Station on 101, quoting incident number 3396 of January 12.”

Scottish Fife and Rescue Service spokesperson said one engine was sent to the scene where crews extinguished a fire within a wheelie bin.

He added: “There were no casualties. Crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

Local councillor Kate Stewart said: "There seems to be a trend happening with young people and wheelie bins not just in this area but around Fife. The concerning bit is they are endangering themselves – they don't know what is in these bins and they could be left marked and hurt."

Last week, the Press reported that vandals torched a wheelie bin in the grounds of Dunfermline's Canmore Primary School, damaging an outdoor woodland learning area. It was the second incident at the school in a matter of days.
