WORKERS have come under fire after completing resurfacing of a Dunfermline street before ripping it up just days later.

Fife Council started six-figure repairs on Chalmers Street last month as part of £100,000 improvements in the area, which was completed earlier this month.

However, a local dog-walker was shocked to see the road being dug up again on Monday February 11 – this time by Scottish Water.

David Goodchild told the Press: “Residents, shopkeepers and passers-by couldn’t believe the road has been dug up to repair a water main already.

“The damage was known about last week, however, the surfacing was still finished in the knowledge that a further excavation and repair would be required."

Fife Council have refuted his claims, stating in their job log, that: "Following removal of the old road surface, water was apparent around a water toby.  This was reported to Scottish Water (SW) on Monday 28/1/19 (AM) and they attended.

"Scottish Water were contacted for a second time as we were concerned about a remaining dampness around the water toby.

"Scottish Water attended for a second time. They were advised that the road was due to be surfaced in four days and if they required to do any repair work they should make it known.

"There was no indication from Scottish Water that they acknowledged the water was due to a leak from their apparatus and would require repair works - therefore the surfacing went ahead as scheduled."
