Fife Council have called on visitors at cemeteries to "respect" the resting place of loved ones after a pile of dog mess was found.

Stephen Vaughan posted a photo on Twitter of dozens of dog poo bags left littered on the grass of Dunfermline Cemetery.

He said: "Visiting a cemetery can be difficult for many people without having to see this mess at Dunfermline Cemetery, disrespectful dog owners."

Fife Council confirmed on Twitter that the litter had been cleaned up and a bin has been placed in there.

Liz Murphy, Service Manager for Bereavement Services said: "We call on visitors to our cemeteries to respect the final resting places of our relatives. Vandalism, littering and dog fouling in any public place is an offence – but in a cemetery it’s downright offensive.

“If you see someone leaving dog waste behind you can report it online at www.fifedirect.org.uk/doitonline If you see an issue with rubbish or a litter bin, call 03451 550022 but, if you have any concerns that criminal or inappropriate behaviour is taking place, call the Police."
