Tonight is the final of the Eurovision Song Contest, the annual competition to crown Europe’s, and now Australia’s, best musical talent. To honour the grandest of all singing shows we have dedicated today’s Timeout to Abba, who won the contest in Brighton way back in 1974.

Abba are Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha (known as Anna) Faltskog, Annifrid (known as Frida) Lyngstad and Benny Anderson

When the group won Eurovision in Brighton in 1974 not many people could have predicted just how far they would go in their careers

Their music is still hugely popular to this day and has spawned two hit movies

Did you watch them win Eurovision in 1974? What did you think of them back then?

The coloured performance picture shows Abba perform Waterloo during the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton on February 9, 1974.

There was plenty of love in the air as the band, who were also couples, celebrated their victory

Included in this picture selection is a shot of Anna and Frida singing Sweden’s entry, Waterloo, during a dress rehearsal in Brighton for the Eurovision Song contest

Brighton Dome was the site of Abba’s historic Eurovision win and still hosts big gigs to this day... but that one will take some beating
