AN ABBEYVIEW woman has hit out at Fife Council who she says have taken away litter bins in her street and not replaced them.

Sheila Carmichael, of Wedderburn Street, has highlighted the irony of the council planning to spend £6,000 on new bins on the High Street while in other parts of Dunfermline they're no more.

She said: "The residents at the bottom of the town would be more than willing to give the old bins a new home.

"If you follow the bus route along Wedderburn Street and down into Wedderburn Crescent you will find that we have no litter bins. Over 260 houses and no bins.

"Five years ago we had seven bins, the council removed two and left us with five. Then, almost three years ago, they took four away all on the same day and put bus timetables in their place.

"That left us with only one litter bin. All the dog owners used this bin until two weeks ago when it was taken away."

Shelia claimed that when she contacted the council they said the bin was no longer fit for purpose but, according to locals, there was nothing wrong with it.

Shelia, 68, who has lived in Wedderburn Street for 28 years, added: "We are all very angry this £6,000 is being used for new bins in the town centre to make it look good when visitors come to Dunfermline.

"I often see tourists walking up from the Glen Gates and it's not the litter bins they are focused on, it's the empty shops that catch their eyes.

"What really annoys the residents is that the street that runs parallel to us, Aberdour Road, has five bins just on one short part of it, from Inglis vets to number 56.

"I think it's because the houses there are worth more.

"It's dreadful, there is nowhere to put rubbish.

"All the kids eat and drink on the move so stuff lands on the ground and people just leave poo bags to the side of the road."

John O'Neil, team manager – parks, streets and open spaces, said: "The bin that was most recently removed was no longer fit for purpose. This has been replaced at Wedderburn Crescent in the last few days. All residents in the area have a landfill bin where those who own dogs can dispose of their waste.

"Members of the City of Dunfermline area committee recently approved funding for the replacement of litter bins in the High Street as the existing bins were rusted, bashed where vehicles have struck them and past their useful life."
