FIFE Council have said they are "hopeful" that the cause of an oil spill near North Queensferry will be confirmed within weeks.

The incident was discovered on Monday and triggered an immediate clean up operation.

Derek Crowe, Fife Council Senior Manager, Roads & Transportation, said Briggs Marine, their oil spill response team, were continuing with the clean-up.

"They have been able to contain the spill within a short section of coastline between the Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing," he added.

"The surrounding area continues to be monitored with no sign of a further spill or any detrimental effect on local wildlife. Briggs will continue the clean-up process into next week when progress will be reassessed.

"SEPA continue to investigate possible sources for the oil spill. At this stage we remain hopeful the cause of the spill will be confirmed in the coming weeks."
