HERO firefighters have been remembered at a special ceremony held in Glasgow's Necropolis today.

For the firefighter family came together to pay tribute to the seven men who died in the Kilbirnie Street fire on August 25, 1972.

The men were trying to rescue a colleague when they were tragically killed in the Sher Brothers warehouse fire in the city's South Side Tradeston area.

The loss is one of the biggest for the UK fire service at a single incident.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry later revealed that the fire spread across the hardboard clad first-floor ceiling which led to the flashover that ended up engulfing the men who died.

The brave firefighters who died included Andrew Quinn,47, Alistair Crofts, 31, Iain Bermingham, 29, Allan Finlay, 20, William Hooper, 44, Duncan McMillan, 25 and James Rook, 29.

Their names are etched on a memorial in the Glasgow Necropolis.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We today honour the seven firefighters who lost their lives in the Kilbirnie Street disaster. SFRS personnel will join at Glasgow’s Necropolis to mark the 47th anniversary of the tragedy."

Chief Officer Martin Blunden also tribute to the seven firefighters who lost their lives while rescuing a colleague. He said: "Our thoughts will always be with the men and their families."
