AN AWARD-WINNING squad of West Fife rugby players will get back together this weekend to mark a special anniversary.

Dunfermline High's first team scooped the title of best school rugby team in Scotland back in 1979 and will reunite on Saturday to reminisce on their glory days 40 years on.

Iain Little has been helping to ensure the latest fixture – a dinner at the Pitbauchlie Hotel – comes to fruition and was delighted that a total of 10 players and their two coaches will be in attendance.

"We have used social media, leaving messages on Facebook, email as well as some people knowing where people are," he said. "Unfortunately, one guy is in Australia, while another couple of guys have very busy diaries and couldn't come."

Iain said the squad previously gathered to celebrate their success at the same hotel, however, only a small number were old enough to legally enjoy an alcoholic refreshment.

"It should be good for a laugh," he said. "We were awarded the title of top rugby school in Scotland in the Forsyth's Rugby Yearbook. There was no competition as such. It was purely based on the record. We played 22, won 21 and lost one. That put us in the Forsyth's Rugby Yearbook for that year.

"The school has not managed to achieve it since. Rugby changed and they don't play it now as a core sport, it is all played through the clubs."
