HE gave it his best shot but James Boyd was left deflated after failing to enter the world record books.

It just wasn't to be for the West Fifer who had his sights set on breaking the record for the longest line of balloons popped by a laser.

A small crowd had gathered at Pitreavie Athletics Centre on Friday to witness the Guinness World Record attempt with 210 black balloons ready to burst.

The initial record was set in 2016 on the TV show 'It's Not Rocket Science', when the laser beam pierced through 200.

James managed just 39.

The writing was on the wall before the challenge had even started as problems with his laser meant it took several minutes for two of the practice balloons to pop.

A steady hand and replacement of the batteries done the trick and once the practice was over the official record attempt got underway.

Momentum was building with balloon after balloon exploding in quick succession.

Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived as balloon number 14 proved to be too much for the beam.

After a lengthy delay, James, from Dunfermline, re-positioned his chair - where he was firing the laser from - closer to the targets and once again progress was made.

However, it would prove to be a stop-start affair with James eventually, and reluctantly, calling it quits with 39 black balloons exploded and 171 left inflated.

Speaking after the effort, James told the Press: "I have concentrated since the summer of 2019 to buy everything for the attempt; laser, mount, plastic cups (to place the balloons on), permission to use the venue etc.

"I am so upset regarding what happened because I had planned everything, but when the time came I really don't think the laser that I used was strong enough because I wanted to create a new record of 210 balloons in a straight line popped by a laser.

"From my heart, I am so upset because I wanted to achieve this record."

James is no stranger to Guinness World Record attempts as back in 2009 he appeared on Britain's Got Talent (BGT).

He emerged on stage with the hopes of setting the record for number of Ferrero Rocher chocolates eaten in one minute.

At the time, the record stood at seven.

He ate four, much to the disappointment of judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan.

Presenter Ant McPartlin bested him with five, but James became an overnight internet sensation.

He would return to the show the following year with another treat in his clutches: After Eight chocolates.

In the build-up to the challenge, he remarked: "I have been practising for the last seven months and ate around 20 to 30 boxes of them. The world record holder from America done eight in one minute. However, I'm going to be doing nine today."

By the end of the attempt, five were consumed.

James had hoped his laser challenge would have been able to feature on Britain's Got Talent last year but he says he wasn't allowed to.

He commented: "I have been ill since my time on BGT in 2009 and 2010 with early stage penile cancer known as BXO (Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans).

“To keep my mind off that I have been concentrating on doing my laser attempt but I really wanted to do that on BGT last year but producers said I couldn't due to me using a laser."
