A SHOPLIFTER who made the short journey from the James Bank Hostel to Debenhams to steal aftershave is behind bars.

Stewart Miller said he wanted to make some money so he could travel to his mum’s funeral.

However, things did not go to plan and he was arrested for stealing the goods.

Miller, 39, of the James Bank Hostel, James Street, appeared from custody at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on November 24 at Debenhams, Kingsgate Centre, he stole a quantity of fragrance.

Depute fiscal Dev Kapadia said Miller was spotted acting suspiciously in the store at around 3pm.

“He was seen putting aftershave in a carrier bag and leaving without paying. Security staff stopped him a short distance away. The goods stolen were valued at £51,” added the depute.

Defence solicitor Yvonne McKenna told the court her client was already on a community payback order and “does not have a good record”.

She said his mother had passed away and he was trying to raise the bus fare to get back to Kirkcaldy for her funeral.

“He’s not going to make the funeral now,” she added.

Sheriff Alastair Brown called for reports and Miller was remanded in custody until sentencing on December 18.
