A DUNFERMLINE dad-of-six who got involved in an argument with his partner about her doing housework while he played on the Playstation has been jailed.

Anthony Godden acted aggressively towards the woman and threatened to kill himself with a knife during the disturbance.

Appearing for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Godden, 34, of Ochil Terrace, had admitted offences which took place on various occasions on November 3 and 4.

At his home and in a police vehicle travelling to Dunfermline Police Station, he behaved in a threatening and abusive manner towards his partner, called her abusive names, held a knife against his throat and threatened to kill himself, repeatedly shouted, swore, and uttered threats of violence towards police officers and struggled with them.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said the couple had been together for 13 years and had six children.

They had been at home consuming alcohol and Godden was on his Playstation while his partner was getting the children ready for bed.

"He was drinking and starts becoming angry because he was losing at his Playstation game," she told the court. "When the children were in bed, the complainer comes down and sits down. An argument started between them and he calls her a bad mother and complains she doesn't do any work in the house. She tries to defend herself regarding this argument and the argument gets more heated."

The confrontation developed and Godden went into the kitchen and got a knife which he held against his throat. The woman attempted to call the police but he demanded she hang up or he would kill himself.

Police did attend and found the woman outside in her pyjamas in a distraught state. Godden was immediately hostile with police and behaved in a "belligerent" manner on the journey to Dunfermline Police Station, the court was told.

Solicitor Ian Beatson said his client was now residing at an address in Cupar.

"He appears to suffer from low self-esteem," he said. "He had met an uncle a few days before this incident and what his uncle said shook his self-confidence. "He then had difficulty coping with that and began to drink alcohol. He has had difficulty with alcohol."

Sheriff Alastair Brown jailed Godden for eight months and granted a non-harassment order banning him from approaching or contacting his partner for five years.

"I am satisfied there is no alternative to dealing with you other than imprisonment," he said. "The offence is bad enough in itself but your criminal record is atrocious."
