AS GENERAL election day looms, Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn headed to Conwy and Colwyn Bay to join candidates on the stump.

Mr Corbyn visited the towns - along side Bangor - as part of a trio of ‘Barnstorming’ rallies on Sunday, December 8 to support Clwyd West candidate Joanne Thomas and Aberconwy hopeful Emily Owen in the hotly contest seats.

Mr Corbyn first visited Miss Owen and 300 attendees at the Llanfairfechan Town Hall at about 3.30pm, where was greeted and spoke with about another 100 people waiting outside.

Miss Owen, who is standing in her second election said: “It was fabulous to welcome Jeremy to Llanfairfechan. The atmosphere was electric and everyone was just so excited to see and meet him - and me too - in the final week before the election. It was just nuts.

“Jeremy has always been a massive personal supporter of mine, so he’s always welcome to visit us in North Wales.”

Following a speech from Miss Owen, Mr Corbyn discussed the relationship between the Welsh Assembly and parliament, as well as wider topics including dependence on foodbanks and homelessness.

Mr Corbyn then returned to Colwyn Bay – following a rally on the promenade during the 2017 campaign – where he joined more than 200 people at the Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre on his final stop in the area. The event was originally limited to 200 members of the public who were required to RSVP - however additional people waiting outside were allowed to join in due to the cold.

Ms Thomas, of Ruthin, said: “Jeremy came because he promised he would. In his speech at the party’s Liverpool conference last year, he brought up his successful rally in Colwyn Bay and mentioned how much he enjoyed it.

“He said he didn’t see a reason why he wouldn’t return – and lo – he did.

“Jeremy shared the message of hope contained in our manifesto, which we are proud to also share and very much applies to us here in Clwyd West.”
