A DUNFERMLINE councillor has called on Asda to help stop their trolleys "blighting" West Fife communities.

Garry Haldane, who represents Dunfermline Central, is fed up of seeing abandoned trollies in the Lyne Burn as well as scattered around streets in the Brucefield area and in Halbeath.

"At the last count, there were six trolleys in the Lyne Burn," he said. "I have today written to both the managers of St Leonard's and Halbeath (Asda stores) to ask for their views and to request they look at introducing some kind of scheme to help prevent their trolleys being taken away and blighting the community.

"I do understand it is shoppers who are taking the trolleys away without returning them but it will be others who are chucking them in the burn, thinking it is funny, presumably.

"If the trolleys were unable to leave the car parks in the first place then this would not be an issue. This is the responsibility of Asda so I hope an agreement can be reached to eliminate this long-running problem in both communities."

Cllr Haldane urged anyone who sees a trolley where it shouldn't be to call Trolley Wise on 0800 652 2678 to report its location.

"They should reclaim it on behalf of Asda but, failing that, contact either Asda St Leonard's or Halbeath to report it," he added. "Also, could I ask that if you are one of the shoppers who are in the practice of removing the trolley in the first place, to return it when you have finished taking your shopping home and not leave it in the streets."

An Asda spokesperson said: "Our colleagues work hard to ensure that the trolleys in our Dunfermline stores remain available for our customers to use but on the rare occasion that one does venture further than our car park, local residents can let us know by calling 01926 455378 or by downloading the Trolleywise App so the trolley can be collected as soon as possible.’’
