SHOCKED pupils and parents have been told of the sudden death of a teacher at Dunfermline High School.

Within the last few minutes, school rector Iain Yuile announced that maths teacher Malcolm Cattanach had died "very suddenly".

Assemblies will take place for pupils affected by the news tomorrow (Friday).

In an email to all parents, Mr Yuile said: "It is with great sadness that I must pass on the news that one of our members of staff, Mr Cattanach, has passed away very suddenly.

"I appreciate that this will come as a real shock to many pupils and, indeed parents, who have been taught by him or been involved in Duke of Edinburgh in the school.

"We intend holding very brief assemblies for S2 to S6 pupils (he had no S1 classes) tomorrow but would ask that you share this message with them this evening.

"The usual school supports will be available for pupils and the first stage of this will be the opportunity to approach their guidance teachers.

"If pupils are experiencing distress in the longer term then we will look to provide other additional supports.

"As a school, we will look to have a suitable way of remembering Mr Cattanach in due course.

"Thank you for your support and understanding."
