POLICE are investigating after five Royal Mail vans were vandalised in Dunfermline at the weekend.

Vehicles parked at in the Asda St Leonard's car park were damaged between Friday, February 28, and Saturday 29 with four windscreens smashed and one wing mirror broken.

Dunfermline councillor Garry Haldane, who works for Royal Mail, said: "Not only does this cost Royal Mail money but the biggest issue is the difficulties this mindless act of vandalism brings in being able to deliver our customers mail.

"Three vans equate to over 3,000 households who potentially would not have their mail delivered.

"I hope the culprits are of an age they can be charged once they are identified.

"If anyone has any information regarding this incident I would urge you to speak to the police on 101, this can be done confidentially."

Royal Mail vans park at Asda St Leonard's as the car park at the Woodmill Road sorting office is too small.

Cllr Haldane explained that vehicles are often targeted by vandals.

"We normally see it every year," he added.

"Last year was not too bad but in 2018 there was quite a lot of damage.

"It took quite a while but police managed to trace the culprits in the end."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police in Fife received a report on Saturday, 29 February, that damage was caused to a number of vehicles parked in the St Leonard's Street area of Dunfermline. Enquiries are ongoing."
