AN AMAZON worker in Dunfermline has tested positive for coronavirus.

A staff member at the fulfillment centre is now in quarantine after being sent home by the online retail giant.

A co-worker of the man got in touch with the Press, and said: "One of the guys from nightshift just confirmed he has the coronavirus.

"The company should lock the department to sterilise it all.

"Instead, people kept working without knowing what was going on.

"The staff that have been sent away was just the ones near the guy who got sick.

"The guy was working already for a few days feeling some symptoms.

"The company is not at all concerned about the health of the staff as they’re keeping it up and running by all costs."

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that one of their employees had tested positive.

They said: "We are supporting the individual who is now in quarantine.

“Since the early days of this situation, we have worked closely with local authorities to proactively respond, ensuring we continue to serve customers while taking care of our associates and we’re following all guidelines from local officials about the operations of our buildings.

“We have implemented proactive measures at our facilities to protect employees including increased cleaning at all facilities, maintaining social distance in the fulfilment centre, and adding distance between drivers and customers when making deliveries.

“The health of our people is our top priority, and it’s important to us that they remain home if they’re sick or if they or someone in their home has had a fever in the last 24 hours.

"To support our people during this time, we have increased entitlement to paid time off and are enabling people to take leaves of absence as appropriate."

Dunfermline MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville commented: "This is clearly a worrying time for the individual and their family.

"I offer them my best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

"I also understand this may increase concern among the Amazon workforce.

"I have previously written to Amazon, urging them to ensure they adopt strict social distancing protocols to protect employees at the depot.

"It is absolutely crucial that any businesses, which remain open, fully adhere to these guidelines to safeguard public health."
