THE number of people who have died in Fife as a result of coronavirus is now 197 – a rise of two on the previous figures.

Figures published by National Records of Scotland (NRS) include those fatalities where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

A total of 73 people have died in local care homes, which accounts for 37 per cent of all coronavirus deaths in Fife.

The majority came in hospital where 107 people – 54.3 per cent – have lost their lives.

A further 17 people have died either at home or in a 'non-institutional setting', representing 8.6 per cent of the overall total.

The latest data available before the Press went to print shows statistics for Week 25: June 15 to 21.

The total of coronavirus-related deaths up to that date equates to 5.3 per 10,000 of the population.

Up to June 21, a total of 4,119 people had died across Scotland after contracting the illness.

The death total is different from the count of deaths published daily by the Scottish Government because the latter is based on deaths of those who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The NRS figures published include all deaths where COVID-19 (including suspected or probable cases) was mentioned on the death certificate.
