A MAN was punched repeatedly by his brother after a family row on Christmas morning.

There was little festive spirit in the air during the family bust-up at 10am.

Robert Harling, 48, an artist living in London, had returned to his mum’s home in Saline for Christmas.

However, an argument over money quickly developed into a physical incident, with Harling putting his 51-year-old brother, Michael, in a headlock then punching him several times.

Harling, whose address was given as Limehouse Art Foundation, London, was not present at Dunfermline Sheriff Court but submitted a guilty plea through his solicitor.

He admitted that on December 25, at Main Street, Saline, he assaulted his brother, Michael Harling.

Depute fiscal Dev Kapadia said: “There was an issue over money. He was staying there and not contributing to the expenses which created tensions within the house.

“He asked for more money from his mum. She told him to start earning a living and the row escalated. His mum said he could stay for Christmas dinner but then an argument broke out between him and his brother.

“The accused grabbed his brother in a headlock and punched him a few times. This all happened at about 10am. The brother was left with reddening to his face and scratches.”

Defence solicitor Alexander Flett said: “He and his brother have never got on.

“My client is an artist and lives in London. During this incident, a comment was made that he 'should get a proper job'. That comment obviously didn’t do down well.

“It’s unlikely that he’ll be coming back home for Christmas this year.”

Sheriff Derek Reekie said: “It’s always sad to hear of family disputes descending into this type of conduct.” He fined Harling £470.
