A SWAN has had to be put to sleep despite emergency services flying to its rescue when it was found on the A92 on Sunday.

The troubled bird caused motorists to contact police after being spotted between the Cowdenbeath and Crossgates junction.

Police raced to the scene and were soon followed by the SSPCA.

Chief superintendent Mike Flynn, from the SSPCA, said the swan was discovered in the middle of the two carriageways at around 10.30am.

"We’re grateful to Police Scotland for helping to ensure that the swan, our rescue officer and motorists were kept safe throughout the incident," he said. "Sadly, the swan suffered a serious fracture to the right leg and, despite the best efforts of our veterinary team, unfortunately had to be put to sleep.

“If anyone finds an animal in distress they should call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”

Police Scotland had thanked the public for their part in the rescue effort.

"Many thanks to all motorists who contacted Police Scotland to report an injured swan on the A92," said a spokesperson. "Our officers were able to locate the swan on the westbound carriageway.

"The SSPCA were quickly on their way to help the swan."
