A HEARTLESS thief robbed a 90-year-old woman in her own home.

The bogus caller attended at the pensioners house in Craigton on Tuesday afternoon and stole a three-figure-sum of money.

The woman’s niece, who asked not to be named, said: “A young man came to the door and said he was there to check her water and electrics because they were doing road works nearby and he had to make sure hers were okay, so she said that’s fine and let him in.

“He checked the boiler then went into another room and took all her money from her purse.

“He then shouted, ‘that’s me done, everything’s fine’ and left.”

The woman soon noticed that her purse had been moved and checked to see if anything was missing.

Her niece added: “She was really shaken up and upset but thankful that she hadn’t been hurt.

“I know it happens round there a lot and it’s quite worrying that they prey on the vulnerable.

“She is still shaken up a bit, but we’ve now put a lot of things in place for her so it’s not going to happen again which is really reassuring.

“She already had a panic alarm, but she didn’t think she was in a state of panic at the time to press it as she thought he was a worker.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to her before so we are all so angry about it.

“The police have been really good; they have been in touch with her and put an alarm system amongst other things in place for free.”

Officers confirmed that enquiries are currently ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating a bogus caller incident which occurred in Salen Street on Tuesday, September 22.

“Around 2.30pm a man claiming to be from the water board gained entry to an elderly woman’s home and stole a quantity of money.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 1811 of Tuesday 22 September 2020.
