WORK on a Dunfermline town centre development is set to affect drivers using a busy route for the next two weeks.

Eastbound traffic using Winterthur Lane is being diverted from today (Thursday) until October 15 to allow access for services converting Pilmuir Works.

Drivers that had intended to travel east towards Carnegie Drive via Winterthur Lane will instead be diverted along Broomhead Drive and Pilmuir Street.

Westbound traffic is not affected.

Fife Council's roads and transportation services department say further works will be carried out in Winterthur Lane between October 16 and November 13, but two-way traffic will be maintained throughout.

In March 2019, Byzantian Developments were granted permission to develop the Pilmuir Works site into flats, shops, bars and takeaway restaurants, while restoring and preserving Dunfermline's last industrial chimney.

The Linen Quarter seeks to combine the heritage of Victorian Italianate architecture with contemporary design and architectural restoration to create individually-designed apartments within walking distance of Dunfermline’s shopping, cultural and travel hubs.

The Pilmuir Street site was last used as a factory by Dunlop, and then Duracord, but it closed in 2005 and subsequently fell into disrepair.

Linklever Ltd gained permission in 2007 for shops, a restaurant, creche and a coffee bar, as well as 80 flats, but work never started and the company went into receivership in 2016.
