JEWELLERY and cash worth a six-figure sum has been stolen during a break-in at an elderly couple's home in Renfrewshire.

Police are appealing for information about the incident, which took place in Crosslee Crescent, Houston, at around 7.45pm on Friday.

Officers said Asian gold of "significant sentimental value" was stolen from a couple aged in their late 70s, who may have disturbed the burglars as they returned home.

Detective Constable Malcolm Clark, of Paisley CID, added: "The householders were just returning home when they saw that someone had broken in.

"They also think that they disturbed the housebreakers, who appear to have run off from the house through neighbouring gardens and possibly into Houston Road.

"We believe that this house was deliberately targeted. The thieves knew what was in the house and where it was kept, so it's possible they may have been in the area – maybe even days before – observing the home and the movements of the householders.

"As you can imagine, the family is very, very upset and it is imperative that we find those responsible."

Police are keen to hear from any witnesses or anyone who may have relevant dashcam footage.
