CONCERNS over classrooms in West Fife becoming too cold over the winter months have been raised by a senior Dunfermline councillor.

At last week's policy and co-ordination meeting, Councillor Helen Law raised the issue that classrooms across Fife struggle with heating management – and many teachers resort to opening windows with radiators still on.

Cllr Law said she was pleased the committee had issued a list of urgent issues to be addressed for education and children and family services.

However, she said the heating management, which was not listed, was particularly urgent as winter draws closer.

Cllr Law said: "I would be hoping that by the time young folk are going back after the school holidays that we’ve managed to resolve some of the issues around the classrooms being absolutely freezing and children left outside at break times regardless of what the weather is.

“These are issues which really need to be addressed right now. With the winter coming in, it’s really awful to think that children will be sitting with classroom windows wide open and freezing to death and in break times and over lunchtime with absolutely nowhere to go – just standing out in the rain.

“We need to do something better than that.”

Councillors agreed to establish a working group to tackle the issue.
