A CAIRNEYHILL couple were left heartbroken after wedding presents were stolen from their reception.

Iain and Carol-Ann Cairney were married at the Keavil Hotel in October and celebrated with friends and family but were left devastated when an opportunist thief nabbed the gifts.

A hamper gifted by Carol-Ann’s three daughters were among the items stolen, it included a smash-able honeymoon fund with £50, pink champagne, personalised glasses, photo frames, a wedding Yankee candle, Hotel Chocolat celebrations, a lucky sixpence, truffles and cards. There were also separate presents including vouchers for Jack ‘O’ Bryan’s restaurant.

She told the Press: “Altogether it was about £200 so it wasn’t hugely valuable but it was sentimental to us. We never got to read the cards that were in the basket and after a fantastic day it just totally put a dampener on the whole event.

“We were absolutely gutted and my daughters were heartbroken because they had really put a lot of thought into the hamper. It’s just a horrible thing to do and unless the thief had got married that day then you wouldn’t need them!”

Iain, 51, and Carol-Ann, 49, had originally been due to get married in July but Covid restrictions prevented that. They had rebooked for July 2021 but as it’s both their second marriages they decided they didn’t want to hold off any longer.

Carol-Ann explained: “I was widowed 10 years ago and so happy to meet Iain three and a half years ago.

“We just wanted to start a marriage together but then COVID-19 stopped our July plans so we rescheduled for October. As long as our family was there, that’s what mattered but the theft did take away from the happiness of the day.

“Pieces of the honeymoon jar were found in a room so we might have walked the past the people that took the gifts! You just wonder what unscrupulous person would do something like that.

“It’s obvious it was a gift, people are already struggling to enjoy themselves at weddings with plans cancelled, guest lists limited and wearing a mask so you have to ask why would they do that?

“They really must have been quite brazen to walk in and take it too.”

Police are investing the incident and the Keavil hotel has been helping with enquiries. A spokesperson said: “Police are investigating a report of a theft which occurred at a hotel in Cairneyhill Road, Dunfermline, on Saturday October 10.

“Enquiries are continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101, quoting incident number 2695 of Sunday, 11 October 2020.”
