TWO Carnock teenagers have stepped up for a special fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Siblings Abbie, 17, and Scott McDonald, 13, pledged to walk 100 miles in January after their stepdad, Brian Dobbie, was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer in autumn last year.

Keen to do something positive and give back, they came up with the walking challenge and, after completing more than 20 miles at the weekend, have just 10 left before reaching the century mark.

Mum Emma said her and Brian were "so proud" of her big-hearted youngsters, who both attend St Columba's High School.

"Brian was diagnosed back in September and we were told it was terminal – we didn't think he would be here just now but he is," she explained. "Just before Christmas, the kids said they would like to do something for one of the cancer charities.

"Macmillan had helped us out just after Brian was diagnosed – everything is new and you don't know what way to turn. I had suggested them and they decided to walk 100 miles in January.

"They have been great. Especially just now with home-schooling. They are getting up earlier in the morning and doing it before settling down. They have done amazing.

"They had hoped to raise £500 but are past that and are now over £600. It is just nice to think other families will be able to get the help that we did. We are so proud of them."

Emma, of Burnbank, said the challenge had benefitted Abbie and Scott as well as the charity.

"It is difficult for them and they are missing their friends so it is good to be able to get out and about," she added. "With the restrictions in place, they didn't want to go too far. They usually have gone down to the cycle track between Dunfermline and Alloa. One day it was really icy so the just went into the park and went in a circle.

"It gets them out of the house and into the fresh air so it is good for them."

Abbie and Scott's efforts have already raised more than £700 for Macmillan Cancer Support and anyone wanting to contribute can do so at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/abbieandscott100.
