NEARLY 80 empty laughing gas canisters have been unearthed in the grounds of Kelty Primary School.

Police have urged parents and carers to warn their youngsters of the dangers of nitrous oxide after the discoveries.

An initial find of 30 canisters was found at the school, followed by another 48 canisters – and balloons.

They were found between January 18 and 25 when the school janitor was checking the building.

Several canisters were also discovered in the Quarry car park on Monday.

Police Constable Barry Smith, of Cowdenbeath Community Police, said: "Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, can be an extremely harmful substance and we would ask all parents to reiterate these dangers to their children.

"Any member of the public with information surrounding the supply or sale of nitrous oxide should contact police by calling 101 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, then through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The gas can cause dizziness, fainting and too much could cause someone to fall unconscious or suffocate through lack of oxygen.

A post on Cowdenbeath police's Twitter said the gas could have "serious consequences" when inhaled.

Publishing a picture of the canisters, they added: "Please familiarise yourself with the picture, the canisters measure no more than six centimetres. Speak to young people in your homes and tell them of the dangers."
