A DUNFERMLINE girl has braved freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall to go the extra distance to support babies born premature and sick.

Seven-year-old Megan McDermott set herself the target of walking 10 miles in a week for charity Bliss as part of its Little Heroes campaign.

Each day during the middle of February, the fearless fundraiser went out in all conditions with mum Alana McDermott and provided regular updates about her progress on her JustGiving page.

Megan, who is a Brownie, has raised £382 so far.

Megan said: “I chose Bliss because I love babies and I want to help them as well as love them. Premature and sick babies need our help now more than ever.

"COVID-19 hasn't stopped them being born but the past year has seen access to neonatal units restricted and stopped families being able to be by their side.

"Bliss is a charity that does such amazing work and I am really happy that I’ve been able to raise money for them.”

Mum Alanna added: “Megan wanted to earn the Charity badge for Brownies which is how it all started. She knew straight away that she wanted to support a charity that helped babies and picked Bliss.

"A sponsored walk seemed the best option due to the social restrictions and we thought 10 miles would be a challenge seeing as we still had school work to do each day!

“Of course, the week we picked to do the walks was the same week as the torrential rain then snow. However, off she went with determination and a positive outlook.

"She geared herself up and got on whatever she needed, whether it be wellies or raincoat!

“We are all proud of Megan as she has shown kindness, confidence, and care for others while raising money for premature and sick babies and their families.”

Laura Anne Mackay, Bliss Scotland fundraising officer, said: “We are so impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment Megan has shown in raising money and awareness of Bliss.

“With more than 90 per cent of parents telling Bliss that they have been feeling more isolated, our Bliss Little Heroes fundraisers like Megan are helping those families know that they are not being forgotten and that support is available for them.

“The money Megan and other children have raised through their superhero missions has been used to help retrain our Scottish Bliss Champion volunteers to offer support for parents on neonatal units.

“She is a credit to her Brownie unit and we hope that others will be inspired by Megan's example to fundraise for our charity at a time when we are needed more than ever.”
