HARD-WORKING volunteers fed-up at the state of their local greenspace have collected 83 bags of rubbish at Orchardhead Woods.

The clean-up in Rosyth was headed up by Charmian Marie Hume, who has lived at Torridon Place, near the dockyard for the last 19 years.

Charmian was joined quickly by a dozen or so volunteers when she posted her plans to clean up the area.

And, every fortnight, they have been working together on a Sunday morning to get the woods in better shape.

The group has also collected dozens of bits of metal and bulky items that have been collected by businesses and the Fife Safer Communities team.

Charmian said: "I've lived here for a long time and use the woods regularly to walk my own dogs as well as clients as part of my dog-walking business.

"It used to be owned by the MoD but it now belongs to Muir Construction. We asked them and Fife Council to tidy it up but we didn't get anywhere so we just thought we'd do it ourselves and everybody has been raving about it, saying how much cleaner it is.

"I was quite surprised by the number of people who wanted to help when I put a wee ad up.

"There's been roughly 10-15 people each time and kids have come along too.

"It's a protected area because of the Rosyth Castle, Dovecot ruins, but unfortunately it attracts a lot of fly-tipping."

Volunteers have given up six hours of their own time to clear the woods and they're looking to carry on the fortnightly clean-up in the future.

Charmian added: "From all the metal we collected we have been able to pass it on to a local business for their benefit.

"I've been following the Fife Street Champions page since last year and it's so nice to see so many people willing to just do their bit.

"The woods are there for people to enjoy now in a better environment.

"I know that children have built a den there and Building Blocks Nursery who are just near it are also benefitting from the clean-up.

"Lots of dogs were cutting their paws on broken glass and there's also the wildlife there to think about so there's definitely lots of benefit to doing it.

"We'll probably now move on to the woods beside Building Blocks Nursery, where there's also quite a bit of fly-tipping."
