A NEW chapter will begin at Bellyeoman Primary School when youngsters return next week with the launch of their new-look library.

The facility has been given an overhaul after a successful funding bid and over £4,000 has been spent to improve the offering to pupils.

Teacher Zoe Mays was delighted to eventually have the project completed.

“The library has been needing an overhaul so we applied for funding way back and it came came through from the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust just as Covid hit,” she explained.

“There has been more than £4000 spent on just upgrading it and getting new books. It has been a lot of hard work but it looks really fantastic.

“This year we have introduced reading ambassadors and we are trying to encourage reading in the school and reading for enjoyment and we feel the overhaul of the library will support this.”

Children have made videos about how to choose and look after books and they will get a chance to visit the library regularly.

“There is a timetable organised and they will get a session to go along and choose a different book,” added Miss Mays. “It will all help support reading across the school.”

The new look library is the latest addition to the school. The Press reported last summer about plans to use abandoned woodland for “magical” lessons in the great outdoors.

The forest area to the west of Whitefield Road has been tidied up so children can learn while enjoying fresh air and a change of scenery.

Ms Mays said the initiative was still blooming. “We are going to continue working on it so it will evolve as we go,” she added. “On our site, we have got a lot of tarmac and to be able to have a green space that the children can access and use is really nice. It is really important and the aim is to have all the classes going out and using the space for outdoor learning.”
