BORIS JOHNSON has described an immigration raid that drew furious protests to a Glasgow street as "routine". 

Sumit Sehdev and Lakhvir Singh were detained on Thursday morning on suspicion of immigration offences by Home Office agents but were released after demonstrators stopped the van in which they were held for eight hours.

Hundreds descended on Kenmure Street, Pollokshields yesterday to stop the raid. 

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said: "The operation was routine, in no way was it connected to Eid.

Glasgow Times:

"We're trying to tackle illegal immigration."

There was anger among those who gathered yesterday the raid was carried out on Eid Al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan and the Islamic equivalent of Christmas, but neither of the two Indian nationals captured yesterday are Muslims.

The Home Office confirmed the two men were released on bail yesterday.
