CRAIG WIGHTON wants opposition teams to “dread” visiting East End and reckons there’s more to come from his Pars pals after their free-scoring cup form.

The former Heart of Midlothian attacker, who joined Dunfermline this summer on a pre-contract deal after ending last season on loan from the Tynecastle club, netted his first goal of the season in the recent 5-1 Premier Sports Cup rout of Dumbarton.

He then added a brace at the weekend in the 4-1 win over Stenhousemuir, a result that saw Dunfermline progress to the last 16, and to a tie with Rangers at Ibrox.

Wighton, deployed in attack alongside Nikolay Todorov and Kevin O’Hara, acknowledges that they are still learning under new manager Peter Grant but is confident they’ll be ready to hit the ground running when league action begins this Saturday at Greenock Morton.

“When a new manager comes in, everyone’s in the same position, and they don’t know where they stand or whatever, but it’s been really good,” he said this week.

“I think the performances have been good.

“We’re still learning his ideas and the way he wants to play, so there will be mistakes at times just now, but I think we’re definitely learning quickly and hopefully we can keep putting in good performances. We’ll see where that takes us.

“The manager was always going to have different ideas. Every manager does, so it was going to take us time to get used to that, and I think everyone’s bought into that.

“I think the most important thing is to hit the ground running. It’s going to be a tough league, it is every year, the Championship.

“I don’t think people realise how tough it is, there’s no bad teams, everyone can beat everyone.

“It’s up to us to hit the ground running, hopefully go on a good run and show everyone else in the league what we’re about.

“We want teams to come here and dread coming here. That’s a big thing for us, so it’s up to us to do that.

“We’ve made a good start in the cup – obviously we want to go as far as we can in that – but at the end of the day the league is the most important thing.

“It’s been good so far but we know we can be a lot better as well.

“It’s up to us to show that and if we do hit the ground running, we want teams to fear us this year. That’s what we’ll be looking to do, but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
