A DRIVER who headed the wrong way up a Rosyth dual carriageway at twice the speed limit in a bid to escape the police claimed he was “delirious” after being hit over the head with a baseball bat.

The driving of 23-year-old Brandon Naismith was described as “idiotic” when he appeared for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

Naismith, formerly of Mitchell Walk, Rosyth, and now of Macbeth Road, Dunfermline, admitted that on November 14 in Kings Crescent, Kings Road, Albert Street and Kings Park, Rosyth, he drove dangerously, at excessive speeds and travelled on the opposing carriageway forcing an oncoming vehicle to take evasive action.

In Kings Crescent, he failed to stop for police.

He also admitted he was driving without insurance.

Depute fiscal Laura McManus said police on patrol had carried out a computer check on Naismith’s vehicle and found it was not insured.

They activated their blue lights and sirens but Naismith failed to stop. He was then pursued by the police and he drove north up Kings Road on the southbound carriageway at 60mph, twice the speed limit.

Twice the police vehicle made “tactical contact” with his car before he finally stopped. The police car went up against the side of the driver’s door to prevent him escaping.

Defence solicitor Aimee Allan spoke about various problems in Naismith’s personal life but was told by Sheriff Alastair Brown: “None of this explains the dangerous and idiotic driving."

The solicitor said: “He’d been hit on the head with a baseball bat by another male earlier that day which had left him somewhat delirious before he got behind the wheel of the car.

"He understands that was an extremely foolish decision to make.”

Sheriff Brown imposed a four-month restriction of liberty order and banned Naismith from driving for 16 months.
