PITREAVIE endurance runner Carol Bruce was in fine form at the recent Trails of Fife 'Splash and Dash' event.

First held in 2017, the four-and-a-half-mile race takes place on St Andrews' West Sands beach, with the 100 runners taking part completing two laps, which included a refreshing run through the sea.

Competing in the F40 age group, Carol was the first runner home in her category, clocking a fine time of 38 minutes and five seconds.

In addition, Scott Clark, Iain Howatt, Debbie Cooper and Lesley Bowman competed in the unique 12-mile 'Scurry to the Sea' event, which began at Hillend Ski Centre in Midlothian.

The self-guided race, complete with three checkpoints to help find the best route, took the competitors uphill to Allenmuir in the Pentland Hills, before heading downhill on a mix of cross-country, urban orienteering and road running, before finishing on Musselburgh's Fisherrow harbour beach.

Meanwhile, school may no longer be out across West Fife but, for two weeks of the holidays, scores of kids savoured a taste of sport.

Almost 200 youngsters of primary age enjoyed emulating the stars of Tokyo by taking part in Pitreavie AAC's Olympic-themed summer camp, which has been declared a "huge success" by the club.

Organised by Kate Crawford, their Run, Jump, Throw coach, it gave children the chance to attend either taster or week-long camps, which included a varied programme of fun, physical activities.

With a number of initiatives hit by COVID-19, January saw Pitreavie able to recommence their Run, Jump, Throw programme, which provides an introduction to athletics for those aged between five and 12 by focusing on fundamental movement skills, with a focus on enjoyment.

In addition to the sporting activities, those taking part were able to show off their creative skills by designing Olympic medals and mascots, while the camps also provided opportunities for West Fife teenagers to volunteer.

Such was the success of the camps, Kate is aiming to run similar initiatives during future school holidays, with the club keen to grow its Run, Jump, Throw programme by potentially extending it to pre-school children and other tailored sessions.
