A GROUP of friends are taking on a family fun run and walk this weekend to celebrate their pal getting the 'all-clear' after battling breast cancer.

About 50 people are joining in the fundraising for Macmillan Cancer, who have supported Katie Blackburn, 35, through her illness.

The event will set off from Inverkeithing's Ballast Bank along the Fife Coastal Path to Dalgety Bay and back again, starting at 12pm on Saturday.

Carrie Wilson, a close friend of Katie's, who organised the event, said: "It's been quite a long journey for Katie.

"She's had chemo and quite a large lump removed but she's now been given the all-clear and it's not invasive anymore.

"She's been keeping in touch with Macmillan through this time so we wanted to support them.

"I do a lot of running and like organising things so I wanted to do something.

"I decided to organise a 5K although I think there will be a lot of children there so I'm not sure how much running will be going on!"

Local company Zaza Balloons will be giving everyone a balloon and providing an arch for everyone to go under at the finish line.

Those attending will enjoy a picnic at Ballast Ban afterwards and football side Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts have laid on their facilities for that.

Fundraisers will be asking for donations and selling raffle tickets.

Carrie said: "I have been friends with Katie for a long time and we used to work together at the Cadora Cafe when we were teens.

"She's been going through this for the last nine months and it's not been nice.

"It's not nice to know someone so close is going through this and at such a young age.

"She's healthy and we didn't expect this so it was a shock for everyone.

"But she has been so brave and got through it. She has a totally different outlook on life now and is very positive."

Anyone is welcome to join in with the event on Saturday.
