THEY'VE had to wait but athletes within Kingdom Athletic have been back on the road competing – and marked their return with a fine showing south of the border.

The team, which is a composite squad of under-20 and under-17 competitors featuring athletes from local clubs, including Pitreavie AAC, were given clearance recently to travel and participate in the National Upper Youth Development League, and competed in its third match in Hull recently.

Although they have missed the opening two matches of the season, some fine performances saw them claim second spot on the day, finishing just 10 points behind City of York, and ahead of Kingston Upon Hull, Gateshead Harriers and Leeds City.

Sean Stewart claimed a double win in the men's under-20 sprints, the first of which came with a 10.08 second run over 100 metres, which elevates him to second place in this year's under-20 Scottish rankings.

He then followed that by winning the 200m – breaking the 22-second barrier for the first time with a time of 21.91, which took him top of the Scottish age group rankings in the process – before finishing fourth in the shot put with a throw of 8.37 metres, and anchoring the 4x100m relay team to a second-place finish.

There was also a double victory for Conor Gourley, who was first home in the under-20 men's 3000m in 8:49.05, and was ahead of the rest in the 2000m steeplechase, clocking a time of 6:34.32.

The under-20 men's 800m 'B' event was won by Patrick Doyle, in 2:18.66, and he also went on to finish second in the 'B'-string long jump thanks to a distance of 3.88m.

Ben Knowles was victorious in the under-20 men's triple jump with leap of 12.44, his best for two years, as he also finished second over the 400m in 50.13, a run that moves him to third in the Scottish under-20 rankings for 2021.

He also anchored the under-20 men's 4x400m relay team to victory by recording the fastest split of the day, which timed at 51.01.

In the under-17 age group, Rory Voss was another athlete to enjoy two event victories.

In the first, he smashed his long jump personal best by 40 centimetres with a distance of 6.47m, with the second coming in the 100m, in a time of 11.11.

Voss also ran the opening leg of the under-17 4x400m relay, which his split of 51.05 the fastest of the day, as the team was anchored home to victory by Cameron Johnston.

Additionally, Johnston ran close to his personal best over 1500m with a time of 4:57.11 to finish second, while a throw of 10.65m also saw him place fourth in the javelin.

Team manager Paul Allan, who is also Pitreavie AAC's club president, commented: "It is great we are allowed back to compete south of the border and, despite the team being nearly half the size of what we are used to, they all performed amazingly well to finish in second place."
