GOLDEN pair Roger Clark and Mary Western were in top form as they claimed Scottish Masters Championship glory recently.

The PH Racing Club duo travelled to the event, alongside Mary's husband, Mark, in Kilmarnock and they produced two excellent performances to win their respective age categories.

Clark, who was taking part in his first race for some time after injury, and six months of focus on short, fast training, ran a superb time of 55.01 seconds to take 400 metres gold in the V50 category, an achievement which also ranks him first across the UK in his age group.

Western, meanwhile, collected yet another Scottish Masters medal to add to her impressive collection, with a fine run of 2:51.89 placing her first in the V55 800m, in what was her first attempt at the distance.

The result also ensured that she is ranked in the UK top 10 for the year so far and, in a family podium double, Mark claimed second place in the V55 400m in 1:12.17, while also running the 1500m in a time of 5:37.10.

Away from Scotland, PH have also had two of their number crowned national champions in the shape of twin sisters Katrina and Gayle Lindsay.

In June, Katrina was triumphant in the British Virgin Islands 5K Championship, completing a clean sweep of wins in the fifth and final race of the Hauteville series by running a fine time of 19:52.

That was followed earlier in July by Gayle joining her sister to compete at the Bermuda National Track Championship, where they both ran the 1500m.

They completed a family one-two with Gayle this time taking home the gold medal, in a time of 5:01.23, with Katrina following her home in 5:02.12.

The club also held its inaugural QA 5K event, licensed by Scottish Athletics, at Queen Anne High School on July 30.

It consisted of competitively-graded 5K races around the perimeter of the school, bringing together some of the top club runners from around Scotland, including Scotland international champions, Commonwealth Games competitors and a world record-holder.

The first male athlete home was Peter Avent, of Shettleston Harriers, who covered the course in 14:55 while Inverness Harriers' Jenny Bannerman clocked a fine 17:20 to place as the first female.

And, in the over-65 age group, Teviotdale Harriers' Alastair Walker broke his own world record with a time of 17:08.

Earlier this month, three PH athletes travelled to Greenock to take part in the Scottish Masters 10,000m Championships, and it brought gold for Malcolm Hammond.

He covered the 25-lap course in a time of 44:08.66 to win the V70 category, an achievement which ranks him first across the UK in his age category, while Mary Western also collected the top prize.

She was first in the female V55 category with a time of 43:36.17, which also put her top in the UK rankings for the year, and husband Mark once again made it a family medal double by winning bronze in the male V55 category. His time of 42:28.24, in what was, like Malcolm and Mary, his first attempt over the distance, saw him reach the UK top 10 for the year.
