PLAQUES with the names of all those who died in the Valleyfield Colliery have been unveiled at the village's memorial statue.

A total of 97 people lost their lives at the pit and Valleyfield Heritage Project chairman Rab McKenzie said it was important to recognise each one of them.

"The statue went up on the 50th anniversary of the disaster. Since the 80th anniversary, the members have always been saying we should get something done," he said.

"We always had an ambition to put plaques up there with the names on it. There were 96 men and one woman killed in the Valleyfield Pit, including 35 men who died from the disaster.

"We are now hoping to get some funding and what we plan to do next is we have got a quote from a blacksmith to put mining silhouettes in High Valleyfield as you come in so we are going to be working on that.

"We are hoping to get that done before the 83rd anniversary next year."
