YOUNG people from Dunfermline Central Mosque have raised more than £10,000 for the crisis in Yemen as part of a fundraiser for Islamic Relief.

It was the highest amount raised by any single mosque across Scotland with around £40,000 raised in total.

Pupils of the academy at Dunfermline Central Mosque presented a cheque for £10,470 to Islamic Relief last week.

Councillor Garry Haldane was invited along to present the pupils with certificates and prizes from the charity for their efforts.

He told the Press: "It's an absolutely fantastic achievement to have raised the highest amount in Scotland.

"This was all done by the children too in the month of Ramadan.

"They took on bakes, lots of walks and all sorts of things to raise the money."

An awards ceremony also took place last Thursday to celebrate the achievements of the pupils over the past year.

They had been studying the iSyllabus course and had their end-of-year exams at the mosque's academy.

Their class teacher, Sajida Aslam, felt the pupils needed a celebration to acknowledge the hard work they had put in, especially due to the difficulties they faced during the pandemic.

Head of academy Shamina Chaudhry said: “The pupils really needed this, especially for their mental health which has been affected by both lockdowns.

"This was our way to show the pupils how much we have appreciated all the hard work that they put into their studies during this difficult period.”

Cllr Haldane added: "It takes a commitment to go the academy with classes twice a week while they are also going to school.

"It shows there are lots of great youths in Dunfermline that are doing a lot for their community and themselves."
