A MURAL to capture Valleyfield's mining heritage has been created in the village's community club.

Relatives of former miners got creative this week to brighten up the space around the old ex-miner's base.

Trust chairperson Rab McKenzie said the focus was on the club's foyer as part of ongoing efforts to recognise the village's history.

"We are just trying to brighten up that area a bit," he explained. "We have the war memorial plaque and the 1939 Valleyfield Pit disaster plaque and we also have the armistice day ceremony there as well.

"We thought we wanted to clean it up a bit. We are hoping to have poppies painted and hoping to have canaries that were used down the pit at the mining disaster plaque."

Local councillor Kate Stewart added: "We had half a dozen volunteers come to help and members of staff came and took a wee stint as well.

"The whole club is being transformed and the committee and staff and volunteers worked in the club while people couldn't get in and made the best of that time.

"We have been wanting the back foyer to be done. It is for the miners and there's the armistice plaque there too. It is going to be a mural for the miners and the soldiers."

The project has been organised by the Valleyfield Heritage Trust after funding was obtained through the Fife Equality Community Grant scheme.
